Why Do My Boat Electronics Reset When the Engine Starts?

The short answer
Electronics usually reset during starting because their supply voltage falls below the equipment's operating threshold. The cause may be a weak battery, excessive starting draw, undersized or corroded wiring, a poor ground, or electronics sharing the wrong circuit.
Starting creates the largest electrical load
A healthy system is designed to tolerate cranking, but every cable, switch, fuse, connection, and battery contributes resistance. When voltage falls at the electronics even though the battery seems acceptable, the distribution path needs to be measured under load.
Do not assume the display is faulty
Multiple devices rebooting together strongly suggests a shared supply problem. One device resetting may still be wiring, but its local connector, fuse holder, software, or internal power supply also becomes relevant.

- Watch for dimming before the reset
- Compare cold and warm starts
- Record whether a battery switch position changes the symptom
The repair depends on the architecture
Solutions can involve a failed battery, cable repair, improved grounds, corrected overcurrent protection, better circuit separation, or a charging issue. Do not add a larger fuse or bypass protection to stop a reset; that can leave the wiring unprotected.
