The short answer

An outboard that starts and stalls may be losing fuel pressure, drawing air, running on stale or contaminated fuel, failing to control idle, losing ignition, or responding to an incorrect sensor input. When it stalls is the best first clue.

Timing narrows the fault

An engine that dies as soon as the key returns from start suggests a different circuit from one that idles for a minute, stalls when shifted, or quits after warming up. Note whether squeezing a primer bulb changes the symptom and whether restarting becomes easier or harder.

Check the simple operating conditions

Confirm the tank vent, fuel level, primer bulb direction, hose connections, control position, and emergency-stop system. Inspect for leaks and strong fuel odor. Do not repeatedly prime or crank a flooded engine without following the manufacturer's procedure.

Modern engines need data as well as basics

EFI outboards may need fuel-pressure testing, injector or pump checks, scan data, sensor verification, and electrical testing. Carbureted engines have different idle and fuel-metering concerns. The model and serial number determine the correct test sequence.

Patterns that make the diagnosis faster

A cold-only stall can point toward enrichment, fuel quality, or idle control, while a warm-only stall may involve heat-sensitive ignition, vapor, pressure, or sensor problems. Stalling only when shifted adds idle speed, propeller load, controls, and driveline condition to the picture.

Record whether the engine restarts immediately, whether extra throttle keeps it running, and whether the primer bulb changes. Avoid repeated adjustments to throttle stops or mixture components; those changes can mask the original condition and create a second problem.
