Why Is My Boat Engine Overheating?
Common causes of marine-engine overheating, what to check safely, and when to shut the engine down immediately.

The short answer
Boat engines usually overheat because cooling water is restricted, circulation has failed, or heat cannot transfer properly. Shut the engine down when an overheat alarm sounds or temperature keeps climbing; continuing to run can turn a service problem into major engine damage.
Start with cooling-water flow
A blocked intake, clogged sea strainer, damaged impeller, failed water pump, stuck thermostat, restricted hose, or fouled heat exchanger can all reduce cooling. Outboards, sterndrives, and inboards route water differently, so the location of the fault depends on the propulsion system.
A visible telltale on an outboard is useful but not a complete cooling-system test. Some engines can show a stream and still have insufficient flow under load or a problem elsewhere in the circuit.
What the pattern can reveal
Note when the temperature rises. An engine that overheats only at idle may have a different restriction or pump problem from one that overheats only on plane. Recent shallow-water operation, debris, a dry start, or cooling-system service are important clues.
- Overheats immediately after startup
- Runs cool at idle but hot under load
- Runs hot only at low speed
- Weak or intermittent cooling-water discharge
- Steam, coolant loss, or a hot exhaust component
Do not diagnose by replacing one part
An impeller is common enough to inspect, but it is not the only cause. If vanes have broken away, the missing pieces may be lodged downstream. A complete diagnosis checks intake flow, pump condition, thermostats, hoses, heat exchangers, coolant level where applicable, and actual temperature at relevant points.
Let the engine cool before opening any pressurized cooling-system cap. If the alarm returns after an obvious intake blockage is safely cleared, arrange a proper inspection before running again.
What to check after the engine cools
Once the engine is shut down and safe to approach, note the alarm, gauge reading, RPM, speed, water conditions, and whether cooling flow changed. Look for an obstructed intake, loose belt where applicable, low coolant in a closed system, or an obvious leak without opening a hot pressurized cap.
Do not treat a normal restart as proof that the problem is gone. Debris can move, an impeller can work intermittently, and a thermostat or heat exchanger can produce a fault only under sustained load. The cause should be confirmed before another long run.

- Do not run a questionable pump dry
- Record the operating conditions
- Inspect the oil if the overheat was severe
